Utah's AKC Wire Fox Terriers
Puppies Arrived March 9th!
Introducing . . . The puppies are 4 days old and are doing amazing! They are all gaining weight–anywhere from 1 to 2 ounces a day. The smallest one, Spike, was the only one that lost weight initially, which is actually normal. The other 4 either gained or stayed the same! And now Spike is gaining quickly just like his brothers and sisters. Time to introduce these cuties. With my kid’s help, we named them according to physical characteristics so we can tell them apart. This one is Spike. He’s got a strip of white across his head, looks kind of like a mullhawk, thus, the name Spike. We thought being the smallest, he needed a tough name. This is one of the females, Dot. She’s got spots on her back–super cute! She is the biggest. We call her the “milk bully” because she will barrel through all the puppies knocking over any puppy in her way. This is Bubba. He has similar markings to the other female, so my kids call those two the twins. We named him Bubba just ‘cuz it’s an awesome name fora puppy, don’t ya think?! This is the other female that is the “twin.” Her name is Speck because she has a speck of white on her black back. Adorable! And this is Bandit. You can’t tell, but he’s got a band of black on his back. Love this picture! Look at that face! Tomorrow, they go in to get their tails docked and dewclaws removed. Poor babies! I will get some video posted soon, so you can see them in action, well, action is kind of a strong word. Moving slowly, but every move they make whether it’s a stretch, a yawn, or shuffling towards Mama is so dang cute! You can tell we are ooooooing and awwwwwing over these guys constantly! Yeah, it’s kind of sick, but we can’t help it!   Today was the day! After pulling an all nighter in labor, Michi delivered her 5 babies without a hitch this morning! From the onset of pushing this morning to the final delivery of number 5, the duration was about  3 hours. She was a little freaked out after the 1st baby and didn’t know what to think, shortlyafter came the 2nd and instincts took over and she began caring for both of them just as she should. It is pretty amazing that they know just what to do to care for their babies. Michi has been an amazing Mama! 3 boys and 2 girls! We managed to get her outside to relieve hersself twice with a lot of coaxing and as soon as she was finished she darted for the door. They are doing well nursing and sleeping and are so dang adorable! Their weights range from .362 to a hefty .494. Individual pictures will come shortly. I am hoping to get a good night sleep to begin to recover from last night, but we’ll see how much cute, squeaky, little puppy cries will disturb my sleep. Although, if I had a list of preferred sleep disturbances that would rate right at the top! Here’s some video clips of a couple of the births. 63 days and counting . . . Michi has been nesting underneath my bed, even though we had bought her a nice Intex Mini Frame Pool. When she’s feeling lazy, which is most of the timethese days, she gets the top 1/2 of her body under the bed and she’s happy. I’m guessing it’s just too much work to squeeze that large tummy under the bed! LOL She didn’t want anything to do with the pool! Last thing I wanted was for her to have her puppies underneath the bed. So, I blocked off access to the bed by sliding storage boxes under there. And I grabbed one of the kids’ play huts and created a dark den inside the pool. She will actually go in there and has taken naps. It’s not her first choice, but whenever she tries to crawl under the bed, I redirect her to her den. Her other favorite spot is my bed! I’m really, really, really hoping she does not try to have her puppies on my bed . . . So anxious for puppies any day! We have a winner! And the winner is . . . (insert drum roll please) 5 Wire Foxy babies! Ok, so, I am constant butterflies in my stomach excited!!! Here they are . . . You can pretty easily spot the 5 heads and the spines. And here is the proud Mama! And nextcomes the scary part! The vet said she could deliver any day now. We’ve gone through the checklist and now we wait for the big day . . .  Little Mama Foxy is Getting Large! Michi is due with her first batch of little foxies around March 6!  And oh, is she getting large! I tried to get a good picture of her growing belly. It’s not the best, but you can kind of get an idea of her cute roundness. Please ignore her shaggy condition. We normally keep her groomed, but decided to spare her the stress in her pregnant state. Pregnancy is taking its toll on our little terrier. She is a bit moody and more lethargic than usual, spending a lot of time just lounging around. She is also finding it harder to jump up on the bed. Time to get a birthing box together and prep for the arrival next week. We will have plenty of pics coming up soon! We have her on a Sojos diet supplemented with puppy food and elk steaks. She seems to be doing well:). Michi’s Stud Watch Michi meet her stud, Coby, for the firsttime.
