GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Some city leaders are pushing for a stretch of High Point Road to be designated as “International Restaurant Row.”
There are more than 70 restaurants representing nearly 20 different countries on the five mile drive.
"You can go to this place and try Mexican food; across the street you can try Japanese," explains Crystal Tapia, with Los Gordos Mexican restaurant.
The three mile portion goes from the Greensboro Coliseum to Groometown Road which is near Interstate 40.
"What I would like to do is tell those 158,000 vehicles a day what we have because right now they are scooting to Winston and scooting to Burlington without knowing what we have right here on High Point Road," explains Tony Wilkins, Greensboro City Councilman.
Wilkins believes signage such as billboards and banner showcasing International Restaurant Row will cost around $6,000. "Keep in mind we have $4.5 million sitting in an economic development bond so this is a minimal investment with what I think is a tremendous potential."
This proposal is expected to be talked about during the city's next work session. It would then have to be approved by city council.
If approved, the International Restaurant Row designation could happen mid-2015, around the same time High Point Road will take on the new name of Gate City Boulevard.
