How to Cook Quinoa

Quinoa, pronounced keen-wah, is one of our staples. We eat it at least twice a week. It is nutritious, delicious, and easy to cook—it only takes 20 minutes! You can’t beat that!

Quinoa is a gluten-free seed that is an excellent source of protein and has a healthy dose of fiber, iron, and magnesium. It has a nutty flavor and texture that’s slightly chewy and fluffy. It is versatile and can be used in a variety of cuisines and dishes. We like to use it in salads, stir-fries, soups, chili, casseroles, and even cookies! The options are endless.

You can find quinoa in most grocery stores. I usually buy it in the bulk bin section, but you can also find it by the rice or other grains. There are different colors of quinoa: white, black, and red.

If you are new to quinoa, don’t be afraid, I promise it is super easy to cook.

First, rinse the quinoa in a fine-mesh strainer. Rinsing removes quinoa’s natural coating, called saponin, which can make it taste soapy or bitter.

Next, place the quinoa in a medium saucepan with 2 cups of water or broth, and salt. Cooking the quinoa in vegetable or chicken broth will add extra flavor. I think both ways are tasty!

Bring the quinoa to a boil.

Reduce the heat to low and cover with a lid. Cook for 15 minutes.

Remove the pan from the heat and let stand, with the lid on, for 5 minutes. No peeking!

Fluff the quinoa with a fork and serve!

See? Quinoa is super easy to make! I hope you will give it a try!
