Today, the Sunday before the official start date of the SNAP challenge, is the prep day. I went to Walmart and started looking through all of the foods that I could buy on my budget of $30 for the week. Because I am a nutrition major and am aspiring to be a dietician or a community nutritionist, this challenge provides a very unique opportunity to for me to get insight into the SNAP program that I spend so much time learning about. I want to try to eat as healthily as possible while staying within the budget that I’ve been assigned. I have been told about this store called “First stop” on Union Ave. that apparently is a discount grocery store that could help me get some produce for a more healthy diet. Today I spent $18.75 on some basic foods that could get me through the week. I got spaghetti and some garlic herb sauce, baby kale (to make kale chips) brown rice, 30 eggs, SPAM, Skim milk, bananas and a few more odds and ends!
