They say a Sunday well spent brings a week of content. Chores and errands? Done. Planning my workouts for the week? Check. Food for breakfast, lunch and dinner? LOL. Yeah… some weeks, not so much.
I can’t say meal prepping is my favorite thing to do on Sundays and there are lazy Sundays when I can’t muster the motivation to visit the grocery store and cook my meals for the week. Buying prepared meals is my only viable option and finding healthy choices can be challenging and expensive too if I’m eating out. Can anyone else relate to the pain of $10+ salads from Whole Foods?
When Perfect Fit Meals reached out to me, I was curious to try their prepared meals. I’ve seen the ready-to-eat meals quite a few times at my Kroger, but never thought to take a closer look. Perfect Fit Meals is a Houston-based company that creates these dietician approved, portion controlled meals for busy bodies, like myself, that need more healthy meal prep options.
At first glance, the packaging is quite strange. It’s definitely not a frozen meal. They are portioned meals in white trays that appear to be vacuumed sealed. It’s actually a refrigerated product and looks like something you could take with you to outer space. The instructions are pretty simple. Tear off the front label, stick it in the microwave for 2 minute and voila! Lunch! The steam from inside the package pushes the plastic out and it’s like waiting for a bag of popcorn to pop. After you remove it from the microwave, you peel off the plastic and enjoy.
I had the chance to try six different meals. I love a good variety. There were two standouts that I thought were tasty and would try again, but there were also a few that I wasn’t a huge fan of eating. Here’s what I thought about each dish:
Coconut Chicken: First glance and I was sure I wouldn’t like this one. It didn’t look appealing at all. To my surprise, this was probably one of my favorite meals of the batch. It was tasty and I loved the flavor in the rice. The snap peas weren’t too memorable though.
Herb Crusted Chicken: Super bland. There was no flavor at all. I finished it for the sake of getting in my protein.
Havana Chicken: Also a bland entree I wasn’t crazy about.
Chicken Parmesan: I was really excited about this one. Healthy renditions of chicken parm usually come out great. I thought it was ok. There was a good amount of chicken and I felt more satisfied with this portion.
Chipotle Chicken Sausage: This was my least favorite and did not look appetizing. It smelled great, but was also very bland. I didn’t finish this one.
Turkey Enchilada Casserole: Totally thought this one was going to be disappointing, but I actually really liked it. It’s too bad the tortilla chips are soggy, but it was really good. I inhaled this one and wanted more.
It appears that Perfect Fit Meals has 16 total entrees to choose from and I was disappointed that I didn’t like most of the ones I got. The turkey casserole and coconut chicken were my favorite of the batch and I’d get them again.
Since the packaging was so unique, I found out that Perfect Fit Meals uses a highly pressurized process which pasteurizes the meals without adding heat or destroying any nutrients. This process also preserves these ready-to-eat meals and allows the meals to last 25-30 days. The prices per meal range between $6-$8 and is really reasonable.
Pros: Price point, easy, convenient, and longer shelf life would be my biggest takeaways as someone who is constantly on-the-go and needs a good meal prep option. Each meal is about 300 calories or so and doesn’t seem to have a lot of added stuff to it.
Cons: Hit and miss with flavorful meals. I personally thought the portion sizes were on the small side. Compared to other prepared food companies, it’s definitely comparable to the small sizes. I was hungry again in the afternoon. It might work better if it’s part of a meal plan where you eat every few hours and not just a lunch substitute.
Overall, I like the concept and the conveniences Perfect Fit Meals offers. It’s certainly a step up for people who are accustomed to buying frozen meals. I think this is a much better option than that. Just based on my tasting sample, I think some of the recipes should be tweaked. If the product is delicious, this could be a great option for Lazy Me on Sundays to prepare for the week.
