Community Lunch is a weekly curriculum component designed to encourage community through a shared cooking and eating experience. Families volunteer for a Friday during the school year and come in to make a family favorite or just an awesome meal for the rest of the school. We sit together as a whole and arrange seating to encourage conversation with new people to converse with kids and adults alike, in addition to helping the lunch makers prep and execute the meal during and after the cooking process. Lunch is a cornerstone of the Brightworks experience that fosters community and connects children to a deeper understanding of the myriad issues surrounding food production, preparation and consumption. We involve kids at every stage of the process – from butchering a pig and making cheese, setting tables, and chopping vegetables, to serving each other, enjoying conversations, and cleaning up when the meal is over.
